Diabetes in Athletes

Being from Denver, I was born a Broncos fan.  It couldn’t be helped.  You’re born here, you’re in the club.  Orange hair and placing John Elway in hero status.

Last week I saw Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler announced he has been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.  You don’t see a lot of athletes with diabetes, at least Type 1, given the demands of exercise, nutrition, and insulin issues.  It got me thinking about the types of changes this 25 years old will have to assume to protect his love of the game, multi-million dollar paycheck, and the collective hopes of thousands of front range Bronco fans.

The glycemic index is well regarded for its treatment and insulin awareness for diabetics.  Whether Mr. Cutler officially adopts a diet born of the ‘glycemic’ index name is unknown, but what’s a certainty with type 1 diabetes is that this will be a lifelong commitment and change.  Whatever dietary and nutritional changes he makes, they’ll share the low GI awareness foundations we benefit from with the glycemic diet.

Now if we can just get him to take us back to the playoffs and beat the Chargers.
